INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP

Beyond working to continually launch innovative, quality products that work, SC Johnson has long been a champion of responsible chemistry, chemical regulation reform and ingredient disclosure.

SC Johnson has a decades-long track record of continuously improving the safety and environmental profile of its products. The SC Johnson Greenlist process, which launched in 2001, formalized SC Johnson's process and made continuous improvement of chemical selection a company policy.

The company has also taken significant and unprecedented steps in ingredient transparency. Ten years after launching its industry-leading North American ingredient communication program, in 2019, SC Johnson fulfilled its promise of a global transparency program. Today, the company offers ingredient transparency to consumers everywhere in the world who use its products.

ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL LEADERSHIP

SC Johnson has over 60 years of experience in entomology and is the world's largest producer of household insecticides and repellents with well-known brands such as Raid®, OFF!®, Baygon® and Autan®. Throughout its long history, the company has focused its science, innovation, and partnership expertise on combating mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, Zika, and dengue fever. Its collaborative initiative on spatial repellents with the University of Notre Dame and The Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, in partnership with UNITAID and with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, represents a critical next step in reaching the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities. With recent studies confirming the effectiveness of its Mosquito Shield™ and Guardian™ repellents in these settings, the company is now supporting the remaining research required by the World Health Organization for a policy recommendation. Once approved, it will be one of the first new recommended malaria prevention tools in 25 years.

With a strong combined background in science and business, Fisk is a passionate advocate for practical paths forward on sustainability issues that include reducing plastic waste, green energy, carbon reduction, green chemistry, and ingredient transparency.

For example, Fisk has travelled worldwide studying the plastic waste problem. He has personally collected and studied microplastics in the environment, from the Arctic to the Strait of Magellan to the Sahara Desert. He has been scuba diving for 50 years and has witnessed dramatic change in the health of our ocean ecosystems. He has also visited numerous recycling facilities, plastic suppliers, and component manufacturers across the globe—all of which has informed his sense of urgency about the need to address the plastic waste crisis head-on.

SC Johnson has a long history of working to find solutions to the plastic waste issue—beginning with our own products. The company launched its first recycled bottle in 1987. Twelve years ago, we launched concentrated refills for our trigger cleaners so consumers could use their trigger spray bottles dozens of times. Today, the company continues to provide more sustainable options for our products.

Another example of a recent initiative is The Blue Paradox exhibit that SC Johnson has created and sponsored at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago to highlight the plastic pollution problem in our oceans. Presented in partnership with Conservation International, The Blue Paradox is an immersive experience on the ocean plastics crisis.

Unfortunately, the pace of change has been slow. Fisk strongly believes that to accelerate progress, the business community cannot solve this problem alone—it takes all stakeholders in the entire plastic ecosystem—producers, retailers, consumers, recyclers, and government alike—working together collectively at scale to solve this issue. For this reason, Fisk is a strong proponent of greater regulation, specifically Extended Producer Responsibility regulation that can enable a strong recycling infrastructure.
